Queasiness, and the first weeks.

Gin Gins Original Ginger Chews

The Ginger People · individually wrapped soft chews · 10% ginger

A soft ginger chew, individually wrapped and easy to keep in a bag or the car. Ginger is the thing people in this position mention most often to each other, and this is the format that survives being carried around all day. It is a sweet, not a remedy, and we are not going to dress it up as anything more.

Editor's note: Gin Gins remain in this edit because I personally find them useful for mild queasiness. That is individual experience, not evidence that they treat medication-related nausea.

Worth knowing. These are sweets and contain added sugar. Check the nutrition panel on the pack, particularly if you monitor your blood glucose. Start with the smallest pack in case the flavour does not suit you.

Reflux lying down.

NHS guidance is to raise the head of the bed by up to 20cm, and it specifically says not to just use extra pillows, because that can put a strain on your stomach.[1]

Mid-rangePutnams

Putnams Bed Wedge

Putnams · handmade in Devon · 76cm long, 15.2cm rise

A full-torso foam wedge that raises your chest and head together — the position the NHS describes, and the thing a stack of pillows cannot do, because pillows bend you at the waist.[1] The 15.2cm rise sits inside the range the NHS gives. It is made in Devon, comes with a two-year guarantee and a removable washable cover, and at 76cm it is long enough that your head is not hanging off the top.

Worth knowing. Reviewers' most common complaint is sliding down the wedge overnight. It suits back sleepers better than side sleepers. Widths run from 61cm to 183cm, so measure your bed before ordering, and note that returns need the hygiene seal intact.

Protein you can actually finish.

A lot of protein powder gets abandoned half-used, and the reason is often sensory. In a commercial consumer study of 974 UK participants, around half of those who noticed a taste change found sweetness more intense.[2] That is consumer research rather than a clinical trial, but it points somewhere useful: buy it unflavoured and sweeten it yourself, and you control the variable causing the problem.

Mid-rangeAmazon UK

Pure Unflavoured Organic Whey Protein

The Organic Protein Company · single ingredient · 400g and 1.2kg

One ingredient, no sweetener system, nothing to react against. If flavoured powders have started tasting cloying or metallic, taking the sweetener out removes the variable rather than adding another flavour on top. It stirs into yoghurt, porridge or soup and more or less disappears, and it mixes more easily than plant protein — useful when you want something down quickly. Certified organic by the Organic Food Federation.

Worth knowing. This is a dairy protein. Unflavoured whey needs milk, yoghurt or food rather than plain water.

Mid-rangeForm Nutrition

Form Pureblend Protein — Unflavoured

Form Nutrition · organic pea, brown-rice and pumpkin-seed protein · vegan and unsweetened

A genuinely unflavoured, unsweetened option for anyone avoiding dairy or finding sweet protein shakes difficult. Three ingredients, nothing else. A 40g serving provides 32g of protein, so a 20g tablespoon gives you around 16g — it can go into porridge, smoothies or cooking in smaller amounts rather than requiring a full shake. Form also publishes finished-product laboratory testing for heavy metals from laboratories it states are UKAS-accredited, which is an unusual and welcome level of transparency in this category.[3]

Worth knowing. Unflavoured does not mean completely tasteless. Plant protein has a slightly earthy flavour and can thicken food, so begin with a smaller amount and build up. Check the current ingredients and allergen information before buying.

Meals that got smaller.

The recurring problem is not the meal, it is the half you did not eat. Food Standards Agency guidance is to eat leftovers within 48 hours or freeze them, and that cooked food should only be reheated once.[4]

Sistema Brilliance Containers, 380ml and 920ml

Sistema · BPA-free, leak-proof, stackable

Two genuinely small sizes, which is the hard thing to find — most storage sets start well above a portion anyone is currently eating. They stack, they seal properly, and the 380ml is about right for the half of a meal you want to keep rather than bin. Reviewers describe them as leak-proof in practice, which is not true of every container that claims it.

Worth knowing. Top rack of the dishwasher only, and open the clips to vent steam when microwaving — never seal the lid.[5] The seals are deliberately stiff, which is what makes them leak-proof.

BudgetIKEA

BOLMEN Step Stool

IKEA · 25cm high · 100kg maximum load

NHS constipation guidance says that using a footstool to raise your knees above your hips can help.[6] That is the whole mechanism, and it does not require a branded product — independent consumer testing of the best-known branded version concluded that similar step stools work just as well. This one is five pounds, holds 100kg and tucks away. We earn nothing from it. It is here because it is the right answer.

Worth knowing. At 25cm this is taller than purpose-made toilet stools, so check the height suits you before relying on it. Constipation has several possible causes and a pharmacist can help you work out what to try.

Keeping your strength.

UK guidance for adults is to do activities that strengthen the major muscle groups on at least two days a week.[7] The bottleneck for most people is not equipment; it is knowing what to do and doing it on the flat days.

BudgetPerformance Health UK

THERABAND Exercise Set, Light

Performance Health · yellow, red and green bands · 1.5m each

The bands physiotherapists actually use, in the beginner progression — yellow, then red, then green, each step about 25% more resistance than the last. Bought from Performance Health's own UK store rather than a marketplace, which means you get the genuine product. They cost about the same as a fortnight of a gym membership, store in a drawer, and if you stop you have lost very little.

Worth knowing. The manufacturer advises wearing eye protection, never using a band in a way that could snap it towards your head, inspecting for tears or nicks before each use and discarding damaged bands.[8] These contain latex; a latex-free range is available.

Tier two: the plain goods.

Everything below is an ordinary object. None of it is chosen for any effect on appetite, digestion or anything else, and we make no claim of that kind for any of it. It is here because a smaller kitchen routine, a walk you actually take and a bathroom you like being in are the parts of a reset people tell us they underrate. Buy what solves a problem you have; skip the rest.

Etekcity Digital Kitchen Scale

Etekcity · 5kg capacity · backlit display

A flat digital scale for weighing protein powder and small portions rather than guessing. Nothing clever about it, which is the point: it turns on, it zeroes, it reads to the gram.

Mid-rangeAmazon

Igluu Glass Meal Prep Containers, 10 pack

Igluu · borosilicate glass · 370ml and 1050ml

Glass rather than plastic, with airtight clip lids, in a small size and a family size. Oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe. The 370ml is the one that earns its place: it holds the half of a meal you want to keep.

Worth knowing. Let food cool before it goes in the fridge, and eat leftovers within two days.[4] Glass lids do not go in the freezer if the maker says so; check the leaflet.

Ninja · 850W · two attachments

A stick blender with a whisk attachment. Soups and blended meals go smooth in the pan, no jug, and the whisk does eggs and batters. Five mixing speeds, two blending speeds, 1.5m cord.

Promixx · insulated stainless steel · Seagrass Green

An insulated shaker and blender cup. Keeps a drink cold for the morning, and the mixing ball deals with an unflavoured powder better than a fork does.

PremiumLARQ

LARQ Bottle

LARQ · insulated · built-in filter

An insulated bottle with a filter in the cap. Chosen because it is the one people keep using. We say nothing about what the filter removes, because we have not tested it and the manufacturer's figures are the manufacturer's.

The French candle everyone recognises. Choose the scent, not the story.

Two useful add-ons.

Not part of the core edit. Worth knowing about if the specific problem applies to you.

  • A handheld milk frother — if your protein drink comes out lumpy, this fixes it for about twelve pounds and rescues a tub you already own. The Aerolatte To Go at Lakeland carries a three-year guarantee. View at Lakeland → (opens in a new tab)
  • A leak-resistant bottle — optional, not essential. If you own one that works, keep it. If not, the Owala FreeSip 710ml holds cold well and carries a limited lifetime warranty. Buy it from John Lewis rather than Owala's own site, which ships into the UK from abroad. The lid needs regular cleaning. View at John Lewis → (opens in a new tab)

Use what you already have first.

  • Your side plate is the portion plate, and a small bowl does more than a divided one. You own both.
  • A piece of tape down a bottle you own is the hydration tracker. Track the total, not the number of bottles.
  • Your phone already counts steps, and you already own scales. Weighing less often will tell you more than weighing more precisely.
  • Cold food smells less than hot food. If cooking smells are putting you off eating, the extractor fan and an open window cost nothing.

What we don't recommend.

The things we looked at and left off — and why
  • Thermos Stainless King food flask, 470ml. Shortlisted, then pulled. The 470ml is model SK3000, covered by a US recall of 8.2 million units in April 2026 — the stopper can eject forcefully when opened, with 27 reported incidents including three cases of permanent vision loss.[9] Thermos UK has published a related notice offering free replacement stoppers for units made before 2022. Current production has a corrected stopper, but the model number did not change.
  • Acupressure wristbands. We could not confirm a CE or UKCA mark, or an MHRA device registration, for the UK-sold product. We would rather leave a category empty than publish a regulatory claim we cannot stand behind.
  • Fibre supplements. Bulk-forming fibre has to be taken with plenty of fluid, and the patient information says so. If you are already finding it hard to drink enough, raise it with a pharmacist before adding one.
  • Collagen. An incomplete protein, sold on skin and hair claims that UK advertising rules do not permit.
  • Electrolyte sachets and hydration mixes. Sodium content varies enormously between popular brands and nothing on the packet tells you. If you are managing blood pressure, kidney or heart disease, or take diuretics or blood-pressure medicines, ask your clinician before adding sodium to your day.
  • Smart scales and body-fat readings. Consumer body-composition readings are not accurate enough to make decisions on.
  • Blue-light glasses. A Cochrane review found blue-light filtering lenses probably make no difference to eye strain, eye health or sleep.[10]
  • Anything relating to medicines, dosing or medicine storage. Not a category we will touch. Storage and dosing questions belong with the patient information leaflet and a pharmacist.
  • Numbing creams, vibration plates, weighted vests, biotin, berberine and metabolism products. No credible evidence in this context, or claims regulators have already ruled on.
  • Fragrance, candles and bath products. They were on this page. They had nothing to do with the problem it exists to solve.

How this was chosen.

Every product is scored against a weighted standard before it reaches this page: whether it solves a named problem, likely quality and usefulness over time, the consistency of independent evidence, the reputation and transparency of the brand or retailer, value, UK availability and returns, and safety and claim integrity. Whether an affiliate link exists at all carries the least weight, and it is applied last.

Star ratings inform that judgement. They do not decide it. A product with strong evidence about its formulation, usefulness and transparency can outrank one with a higher score and thinner substance behind it, and a well-rated product still comes off the page if we cannot stand behind its claims.

We have not personally tested these. Where we say something works we point at published evidence, official guidance or independent testing, and say which. Prices and star ratings are not published here, because we cannot keep them accurate.

Do I need any of this?

No. The free tracker and the guidance in our journals will do more than anything here. These are objects that remove friction, and only if the friction applies to you.

Why does one product earn you nothing?

Because it is the right answer. The step stool is five pounds from IKEA, who do not run an affiliate programme, and a branded alternative would pay us. We list the five-pound one.

Can I take a supplement alongside my medication?

That depends on what you take and on your own health, so it is a question for your prescriber or pharmacist rather than for us. Take a list of everything you take to a pharmacy counter — the conversation is free and they are good at this.

When should I stop reading a shop page and speak to someone?

If sickness or vomiting is severe or you cannot keep fluids down; if reflux is frequent or painful; if constipation has not shifted after a couple of weeks; if you notice blood in your stool or a persistent change in bowel habit; or if anything is getting worse rather than settling. Contact your prescriber, pharmacist or GP, or call NHS 111. The NHS pages linked in our sources set out when to seek help.[6]

Sources reviewed.

Every source behind the claims on this page

Each is labelled by what kind of evidence it is, because the difference matters. Official guidance is not the same as a single study, and a manufacturer's own statement is not the same as either.
